The American Dental Association has set the mandatory protocol for detecting oral lesions as an annual health history review with a visual and tactile examination.
With advancements in technology, we now have the ability to “bring light” to abnormalities at much earlier stages utilizing fluorescence. Fluorescence technology will assist in discovering abnormal lesions at the earliest stages. Identifying more than just cancer, fluorescence technology allows us to discover increased metabolic activity which can result from a palatal burn, to a cheek bite to a squamous cell carcinoma. So how do we decipher between the burn and bite, to anything more severe? Introducing the F.A.C.T. Oral Health Protocol™.
The F.A.C.T. Oral Health protocol will help guide us through the process of elimination to determine the next steps in diagnoses. F.A.C.T. stands for Fluorescence Assessment, Cytology Test.
During the Fluorescence Assessment, we are looking for dark lesions. If we discover any lesions that appear dark, or abnormal, we recommend re-assessing within 2 weeks. Any trauma due to thermal or mechanical damage will have healed by that time. If the lesion is still present and continues to exhibit a loss of fluorescence, we will then move to the next step of the protocol, a Cytology Test using CytID. This simple and inexpensive test will give us a diagnostic result read by a pathologist on what is happening on a cellular level. Receiving results back in approximately 1 week, the readings will report Normal, Dysplastic, or Malignant along with additional notes on other conditions such as presence of fungus, bacteria, leukoplakia, etc. HPV testing is also available with CytID.
CytID liquid based cytology is not a replacement for the standard of care biopsy. This will help you gain more information regarding a lesion, so we can have a more informed plan of action. In the common occurrence that the results come back normal, your mind will be at ease, and the BDD Team will rest assured that we provided the best quality of care.
